Sony is not planning on releasing big budget films at all until things are back to normal. That means we’re not going to be seeing Spider-Man 3, Venom 2, Morbius, and many other Sony related films for a long time.
From The Wrap, here is what Tony Vinciquerra, Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman, had to sqay:
What we won’t do is make the mistake of putting a very, very expensive $200 million movie out in the market unless we’re sure that theaters are open and operating at significant capacity.
To be honest, this is unrealistic expectations. The pandemic is still going strong, and theaters are not going to be back to normal, and the same goes for many other activities. Film studios who are trying to wait it out to release films should go the VOD route because it has shown to do well.
