In a recent interview, Dorian Kieken (development director at BioWare during the production of the Mass Effect series), has said that there was a Mass Effect game that was inspired by Han Solo from Star Wars!
Here’s what Kieken told The Gamer:
We explored a game concept back in 2008, a bit after the shipping of [the first] ME, where you were playing a Han Solo type of character in a Star Control-inspired game in the Mass Effect universe. The game was intended to expand the Mass Effect universe and be done in parallel [with] the trilogy.
I like the idea of exploring a ‘grayer’ character, akin to a smuggler/pirate type in the ME universe. It also allows you to see the world from a different point of view than the one of the chosen super- soldier. It’s a bit like exploring the Star Wars universe without being a Jedi, or the Warhammer 40k universe without being a Space Marine.
We all needed to focus on Mass Effect 2, which was the right call at the time. I think the concept was really strong, though, and I would definitely like to see a game like that one day.
A Mass Effect game inspired by Han Solo would’ve been such a great game. I feel like they should’ve still went that route after Mass Effect 3 or even after the second game since the idea was already there, and would’ve been better than Andromeda. Maybe we can still see that concept later on in the future, but only time will tell.
