Ava DuVernay’s ‘New Gods’ & James Wan’s ‘The Trench’ Canceled

Well, a dumb move was made today. Warner Brothers has canceled both Ava DuVernay’s New Gods and James Wan’s Aquaman spinoff, The Trench.

From THR, here’s what WB’s said:

As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward,” Warner Bros. and DC said in a statement. “We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.

Honestly, I don’t know what to say because I’m both shocked and not surprised. For some reason, when it comes to DC films that was planned or is being worked on, it always seem to get canceled or put on a long hold then get canceled. I mean they’ve said they can possibly bring these films back in the future, but it’s not the first time this has happened.

I think what hurt the most was that New Gods was canceled, especially since Ava DuVernay has been working on it since 2018. I was ready to see some King Kirby love in the DC side in live-action, but I guess not. The situation does suck a lot.

Who knows? Maybe we can see both The Trench and New Gods on HBO Max, but I’m not getting my hopes up.
